I had a wonderful experience at Miss Rodeo America. The 8 days of competition was very busy with an average of 5 hours a sleep each night. Most of our time throughout the day was spent in rehearsal learning dancing and staging in preparation for the fashion show and coronation.
Coronation was held Saturday afternoon; I am honored to have made the Top 10! Miss Rodeo South Dakota, McKenzie Hayley won the title. My biggest fan, my grandpa, Ralph Evans and I dancing at the Get Acquainted Party.

Great Lakes Circuit Finals

Last week I was in Louisville, Kentucky for the Great Lakes Circuit Finals. I flew down on Wednesday night and activities started on Thursday. Visiting queens helped with check-in and handed out jackets and vests. We were all very excited to get our own vest donated to us by our circuit committee and sponsors. Circuit queens, Erin Watts; Miss Rodeo Missouri, Katie Chaffin, Miss Rodeo Illinois, and Amanda Breitenfeldt, Miss Rodeo Wisconsin.

Thursday night was the first performance; we carried the opening flags, chanced out cattle and carried sponsor flags during the performance. We were also able to help with a pizza party for the contestants. On Friday we were able to visit Church Hill Downs; where we went on a tour and watched a few races. We signed autographs at the Friday night performance along with carrying flags. Saturday afternoon we visited a couple Dodge dealerships and handed out hats and bandannas to children at the Saturday nights rodeo.
I had a wonderful time in Louisville and arrived home late Sunday night.

Over the last few weeks I have had the opportunity to speak at a few events. I was the keynote speaker at the District FCCLA meeting, where I spoke about community service. Last week I was also able to speak at the National Honor Society tapping in my home town where I talked about service and random acts of kindness.

On Monday afternoon I was invited to speak at the Carroll Rotary and Kiwanis Club. I was able to answer a variety of questions and I also gave my speech that I will give at Miss Rodeo America.

I really enjoy speaking at events and am so thankful for all of the support I have had this year! I have been truly blessed and can’t thank everyone enough for all of their generosity.

I will be leaving for Las Vegas the day after Thanksgiving. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I head out to compete for Miss Rodeo America. Coronation will be Saturday, December 4.

Top Rail Saddle Club Breakfast

Thank you to the Top Rail Saddle Club for hosting a benefit breakfast to help with my expenses for my trip the Las Vegas. The breakfast was held last Sunday at the Lake City Community Building. There was a great turn out and so many wonderful people who volunteered their.
I really enjoyed talking to each individual who attended and answering a number of questions about the pageant and my year. My community has been so supported this year, there are so many people who have not only supported me financially, but have given me so much of their time! I can’t thank everyone enough, God has truly blessed me this year and I pray I will be a good representative of my community and state at Miss Rodeo America.

Send Off Party

My send off party for Miss Rodeo America was held at the Community Building in Lake City. Thankfully this time there we had electricity and didn’t have to worry about an ice storm!
Each year Miss Rodeo Iowa holds a send off party to give her the chance to model all of her clothes that she will wear in Las Vegas. It’s a great chance to give people an idea of what takes place in Las Vegas. So many people had no idea that I would be wearing leather dresses and they didn’t realize all the categories rodeo queens compete in.
This brown and turquoise jacket is for my horsemanship interview. It was made by Chelsea Schwarz from Iowa City.

This jacket along with a skirt was made by Ashley Kelber. I will wear this for my personal interview.

This dress I am wearing is my fashion show and coronation dress. It was made by Candice Carper of Oklahoma.

I had a wonderful turn out and would like to thank everyone who came and supported me.
I will be leaving for Las Vegas the day after Thanksgiving. My grandpa has volunteered to drive all of my clothes out. With a weight limit of 50 pounds and a limit of two bags per person, my 10 pairs of boots, four leather dresses and a number of other outfits along with a few cowgirl hats, would never fit! Thank you grandpa!

Cyclone Stampede

Last week I was able to attend the Cyclone Stampede in Ames. Hannah and I carried flags and chased out cattle. It didn’t take long for me to realize that fall is here, the temperatures dropped very quickly on Friday night. Saturday I was more prepared for the performances with a few layers of clothing!
Despite the chilly weather it was a lot of fun and I was able to see a few of my high school rodeo friends compete.
I have a couple weeks off before my send off party which is set for Sunday, October 24 at the Lake City Community Building from 2-4 p.m. I will model my clothes for Miss Rodeo America and give my speech. It’s FREE and open to the public…I hope to see you there!

Justin Boots Championships in Omaha

Last week I was able to attend the Justin Boots Championship Rodeo in Omaha. Miss Rodeo Nebraska and Miss Rodeo Wyoming were also there.

On Thursday we did a school visit and then stopped at the children’s hospital. We met up with the Ak-Sar-ben Queen, Morgan Marshall, the Ak-Sar-ben Lady in Waiting, Gina Jespersen, and Miss Rodeo Cherokee, Tally Roepke.

The first performance was Thursday night. The Championship’s consisted of the top 12 contestants on the tour. They each competed in two rounds hoping to make the semi-finals and then the finals on Saturday night. Every performance was pretty intense!

For each performance we were able to help with mutton busting and after the rodeo we handed out buckles at the buckle presentations.

On Friday we had the opportunity to help with the Exceptional Rodeo. I was paired with Evan, he was so much fun! There were over 60 contestants and I was excited to see so many rodeo contestants there to help. After the rodeo there was a luncheon. I had so much fun and it was a blessing to see all of the smiles and excitement in the child’s eyes.

I would like to thank Carrie Goedeken and her family for allowing me to stay with them and the rodeo committee for all of their hard work each year.

National Cattle Congress Fair and Rodeo

The National Cattle Congress Rodeo was this weekend in Waterloo. Fall was in the air, it was a little chilly both nights I was there. On Friday I was able to carry the American Flag and chase out cattle. Then on Saturday Hannah was there to help me out. We had a lot of fun and I enjoyed signing a number of autographs.
Tally Roepke was very kind to make the trip to Waterloo to help with the Sunday afternoon performance since Hannah and I were not able to attend. Thank you Tally and Hannah for always helping out!

I headed back to my hometown to participate in my Uncle Dell’s Memorial Chili Cook-off. I will have to admit I like rodeos in the rain a lot better than cooking chili in the rain! My cousin, Nicole Blair and I teamed up and made “Tough Enough to Wear Pink Rodeo Chili.” We had a lot of fun despite the cold and rainy weather. Unfortunately we didn’t come out on top, but we had a lot of people vote for us for the “People’s Choice Award.”
I will have a couple days off before I head off to the Justin Boots Championship Rodeo in Omaha.

What a busy week and a half!

The last week and a half have been rather busy. I started off in Dayton visiting schools and enjoying lunch with a few of the committee members. Then on Friday I headed to Fort Madison. I stayed at the “Metcalf Hotel” owned and operated by Jeff and Kelli Metcalf. They are so kind and open their home each year for Miss Rodeo Iowa to stay during the hectic weekend.
On Saturday morning I helped with the pancake breakfast and special needs rodeo. I was surprised…there were over 200 contestants! It was a beautiful day and I had a wonderful time helping with the events. The committee does an outstanding job hosting the special needs rodeo and this year marks their tenth year.

After the rodeo I headed back to Dayton. I was able to attend the Dayton Rodeo Saturday and Sunday evening. There was a little rain, but not enough to ruin my “queen hair.”

Sunday night I stayed in Johnston so I was able to get up early and head back to Fort Madison to help with the Little Spurs Rodeo on Monday. I’ve never seen so many excited children. There was mutton busting, steer riding, stick horse barrel racing, goat tying, calf chasing and the greased pig contest.
It was a lot of fun to be there and help out. The announcer thought it would be funny to have the greased pig winner give the queen a hug; needless to say I was covered in Crisco!

Monday night I was honored to judge the Lil Miss Rodeo and All Around Cowboy competition. All of the contestants were so cute, it was a tough competition.
I visited schools on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning. I really enjoy children, so going from room to room talking about my favorite sport was a blast! It was neat to see how many of the students attended the rodeo and remembered the clown and specialty act from last year.

The Miss Rodeo Iowa contestants checked in on Wednesday afternoon. I was able to catch a bit to eat with them before the grand entry. I always look forward to the Fort Madison grand entry as I’m sure most of the spectators do! Each night there was over 400 horses, ponies, donkeys and mules that went through, it’s a rodeo in itself!

What a beautiful sight to see the American flag being brought in from the sky by Bobby Reid. Watching Old Glory come down from above gives me the goose bumps.

After school visits on Thursday Hannah, Rachel Kelderman; Miss National Federation of Professional Bullriders (NFPB) and I met up with the Miss Rodeo Iowa and Teen contestants for lunch. We had a few hours off that afternoon and I was able to do a practice interview with the panel of judges. We were honored to have Dr. Jennifer Schleining-Cerfogli, Tom Nealey and Kelly Azevedo there to judge. On Friday we started off with the horsemanship competition in the drizzling rain. After horsemanship we stopped and had lunch at Hy-Vee and headed back to the hotel to practice for the fashion show and prepare for the speeches and impromptu competition. Friday night was wet! It poured and for the first time since I’ve been to the rodeo the grand entry was cancelled. Hannah and I bundled up in rain coats and headed out. We had a good time and I was surprised to see so many people in the stands.
Saturday we were in the parade and then coronation practice. Coronation was held at the Comfort Inn. Congratulations to Miss Rodeo Iowa 2011, Heidi Ganson and Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa 2011, Charity Howk.
On Sunday morning the new queens along with Hannah and I headed out to serve at a pancake breakfast. I’m very excited for the newly crowned queens; their lives are going to be changed over the next year.

I had a wonderful time in Fort Madison and Dayton and would like to thank both rodeo committees. They both work so hard and put on outstanding shows each year.

Prairie Meadows Racetrack

Last weekend I enjoyed an evening at Prairie Meadows Racetrack. Butch Hammer, the President of the Iowa Quarter Horse Racing Association invited me out for the Challenge Races.

I was able to sign autographs and do a couple interviews John Hernandaz. John has been involved with horse racing for years and before each race he gives his opinions on who will win and possibly place. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to give my opinion on a couple races. I think there was a little beginner’s luck because I was right on the first race! It was a beautiful evening and I had a wonderful experience.

On Saturday I will be heading down to Fort Madison to help with a pancake breakfast and the Special Needs Rodeo. After the rodeo I will head back to attend the Dayton Rodeo. I will be there on Saturday and Sunday night and then back to Fort Madison Monday morning. It’s going to be a busy week, but I am excited for the Tri-State Rodeo and look forward to the Miss Rodeo Iowa Pageant.

Non-Stop Fun at the Iowa State Fair

The Iowa State Fair Opening Ceremony was on Thursday and Hannah and I were very fortunate to carry the American and Iowa flags. The ceremony was held in the new Jacobson Exhibition Center. The ceremony was live on Skype and they interviewed Iowa Soldiers that were stationed thought the country. It was a wonderful ceremony and I am so thankful for the men and women who dedicate their lives to keep our country free.

Friday I headed back to the fair where I was able to carry the American Flag and run a queens run before the Cowgirl Queen Contest. Hannah competed in the senior section of the contest and was crowned an attendant. Congratulations to her, she did a wonderful job.
On Saturday Hannah and I showed in the Governors Steer Show. I was second in the ring behind Governor Culver. My steers name was Big Red. Boy was he big and didn’t like to stand still. I had a hard time slowing him down, but did manage with a smile on my face even though he stepped on my foot several times. I was so glad I had boots on and had the owner in the ring to help me. Otherwise the news headlines might have read “Rodeo Queen Plowed By Steer.” I had a wonderful time and Big Red sold for over two grand. All the money raised goes to the Iowa Ronald McDonald Houses. This is near and dear to my heart as my sister and her husband spent over three months at the house in Des Moines when my nephew was in the Children’s Hospital.

I have a week off and then I will head out to Prairie Meadows and sign autographs at the horse races on Friday, August 27.

Rodeo Town USA

This past week was the 87th Annual Sidney Rodeo. I was asked to judge the Sidney Rodeo Queen Pageant which started early Tuesday morning. There were three wonderful contestants that competed throughout the day. Congratulations to Amanda McNees who won the title.
Hannah, Amanda and I before the rodeo performance. While in Sidney we visited local sponsors, stopped at nursing homes and had a several radio interviews. Iowa State University Queen, Alicia Davison, Amanda, the new Sidney Queen, rodeo bull fighters Cory Wall and Andy Burelle, along with Gizmo McCracken, the rodeo clown visiting the local nursing home.

Each night I participated in the grand entry, made a queen’s run, helped chase out cattle and was able to help with the mutton busting. After the rodeo Gizmo the clown, the bull fighters and all of the queens signed autographs.

I stayed with Kary Koso and her boys; Zack and Gage. They were so generous and let me make myself at home. I had so much fun playing with the boys and gave them a ride on my horse, Sammy.

The state fair starts this week and Hannah and I will be carrying flags for the opening on Thursday morning. On Saturday we will both be showing a steer in the governors steer show.

Cheyenne Frontier Days

I had a wonderful time at my first Cheyenne Frontier Days, the “Daddy of ‘Em All.”
On Friday morning I was able to show off my pancake flipping skills in Cheyenne. The state queens were able to help cook and flip pancakes for their breakfast that fed over 8,000 people that morning. The volunteers have everything down to a science, the line went all the way around the block and the longest you had to wait was about 15 minutes. We visited local sponsors and signed autographs before heading out to the rodeo grounds. Harry Vold provided us with horses and these horses have been doing this for years. I’ve always heard about the “fly bys” at Frontier Days and you better be ready when you let your horse go because there is no stopping them until the other end of the track! It was a lot of fun.
Each night they have a concert and we were able to introduce ourselves before the show began. We got to see Sugarland, Josh Turner and Allan Jackson. Dan Post boots is a large sponsor for some state queens, here we are with Greg Hensley.

I would like to thank my host home, David and Patty Thompson. I can’t thank them enough for all of their hospitality. They were so generous and came and watched us at each event.

My trip to Cheyenne wouldn’t have been arranged without all of the hard work by Arlene Kensinger and Ester Moore. They dedicate a large amount of time to schedule the state queens and treat us like royalty while we are there. I would also like to thank my mom, Joanne for driving out with me; I needed to be home to head off to Sidney on Monday night so she has been my chauffeur. The drive is about 10 hours and I couldn’t have made it on my own. Thanks mom!

I will judge the Sidney Queen Pageant on Tuesday and spend the week at the rodeo. I have always enjoyed the Sidney rodeo and can't wait to go!

Colorado

My recent trip to Colorado was very adventurous. While I was out there I attended the Rooftop Rodeo in Estes Park and the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo in Colorado Springs. I was also able to attend Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame Inductees as well as the Miss Rodeo America Seminar.

Estes Park was beautiful; the town is located in the Rockies right on the continental divide. The rodeo committee and volunteers were the most appreciative people I have ever met, I can see why they have won Rodeo Committee of the Year a number of times. While in Estes Park I stayed with Jessi Kokjohn, the Miss Rodeo Iowa Pageant Director. Jessi and her fiancé, Erik, manage a riding stable and give trail rides through the mountains. Miss Rodeo Florida, Heather Hall, and I were able to stay an extra day and go on a trail ride!
I was also able to go rock climbing and learn how to fly fish while in Estes Park. We were very fortunate to meet a committee member who owns a recreational store and arranged a couple of excursions! We had no luck fly-fishing, but it was a great learning experience and as far as rock climbing, I was very successful and it was lots easier than I thought! The Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo activities started the second week I was out there. We were able to assist committee members before the rodeo with a number of activities and help with the mutton busting each night during the performance. While in Colorado Springs we rode the train to the top of Pikes Peak, toured the Pro Rodeo Hall Fame and airforce base, helped with an Exceptional Rodeo and attended the Hall of Fame Inductees.

The inductions were held on Saturday morning. There were five inductees and listening to each of them talk about their lives and all of their hard work and dedication was really inspiring. They have all had such a positive impact on the sport of rodeo. I was eager to meet Paul Mayo, a Grinnell, Iowa native and two-time world champion bareback rider.

On Sunday the Miss Rodeo American Seminar started and ran through Wednesday afternoon.

On Wednesday I left and arrived in Lenox on Thursday for the rodeo. I was able to see the horsemanship competition for the Lenox Rodeo Queen title. I had a wonderful time in Lenox carrying flags and running out cattle.
Congratulations to Kayla Barber who was crowned Miss Rodeo Lenox 2010.

My traveling schedule hasn’t slowed down, although I did have a couple days at home where I met with clothes makers and worked.
My mom and I are off to the “Daddy of Them All” the Cheyenne Frontier Days. We will be out there until Sunday and will be driving through the night so I can head to Sidney Monday afternoon!

Leon Queen Pageant and Rodeo

On Friday morning I went to Leon to judge the Miss Leon Rodeo Queen and Miss Leon Rodeo Princess Pageant. There were eight girls in each and we started off the morning with horsemanship.
Following the horsemanship we headed to the Leon School to have personal interviews, listen to speeches, impromptu questions and judge the girls modeling.
Coronation was held before the rodeo performance that night. Congratulations to Jessica Lutz Miss Leon Rodeo and Shelby Keys Miss Leon Rodeo Princess.
All of the contestants did a wonderful job! I stayed for the rodeo Thursday night and Hannah and I were able to help with the Mutton Busting and carry a flag in the grand entry.
The Leon Chamber of Commerce puts on a wonderful show! I have heard over the years how great the rodeo is and now I know for myself.

Ill be on the rodeo again Thursday; heading out to Colorado for two rodeos. One rodeo is in Estes Park and the second is in Colorado Springs. I’m so excited because while I’m there I get to attend the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame Induction as well as a queen seminar. On my way home I’ll be stopping in Lenox for their rodeo. It’s going to be a long trip, but I am really looking forward to it.

What a Weekend!

The Edgewood Rodeo was another first time event for me. I arrived there last Thursday and met up with Hannah, Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa. We attended a children’s carnival that afternoon where we signed several autographs.
Hannah and I had a radio interview before the rodeo on Thursday and we carried sponsor flags and chased out cattle during the rodeo.
On Friday we had a wonderful tour of Edgewood, that little town has so much to offer! We were able to stop and visit a nursing home and a daycare. We toured the Edgewood locker and stop at the golf course where they held a charity golf tournament. Before the rodeo on Friday we had another radio interview and an interview with News Channel 9.
The rodeo started on Thursday night and ran through Saturday, but I was only able to stay for Thursday and part of Fridays rodeo because my home town rodeo was held last weekend too.
I had a great time in Edgewood. I would like to thank Jim and Kathy Funke who opened their home for Hannah and I to stay and thank you to John and Sue Romig who let us stall our horses at their home.

My weekend was rather busy in Lake City with the rodeo, a parade, my class reunion, Emily’s bridal shower and the Exceptional Rodeo! I was also selling raffle tickets throughout the weekend for a horse that was donated to me for a fundraiser.
The parade was Saturday afternoon and boy was it hot! With temperatures around 100 degrees, there was really nothing you could do to cool off.
Each night at the rodeo I led the grand entry and carried the American Flag. Throughout the rodeo I signed autographs and sold raffle tickets. On Sunday afternoon I held an Exceptional Rodeo. Contestants were able to rope, barrel race, saddle bronc ride and ride one of my horses. It was so much fun and it couldn’t have been done without all of the volunteers. A big thank you to everyone that helped. I had a wonderful weekend at my hometown rodeo and I am so thankful to represent such a wonderful community!

I will be heading to Leon on Friday to judge their queen pageant. I am really looking forward to it!

Miss Rodeo Iowa Travels

From Fort Madison to North Platte, Nebraska and back to Bellevue…the last couple of weeks have been crazy. After Cherokee I headed to Fort Madison to judge the Iowa High School Rodeo Queen Pageant. It was a tough competition and all the girls did a wonderful job. I had to leave for NebraskaLand Days before the coronation. Alex Soukup was crowned the IHSRA Queen for 2010-2011. I arrived in North Platte around noon on Sunday for the Miss Rodeo Nebraska pageant. There were 15 other state queens and Kelli Jackson, Miss Rodeo America was also there for the week. We had a very busy schedule throughout the week; it started Sunday night after the horsemanship competition. We had a BBQ with a live auction and then a “fun” rodeo. We made up teams of 5 and competed on stick horse’s doing multiple races. Due to the rain the floor was a little slick in the shelter house and a few of the queens had a crash! Hats and crowns flew everywhere, but thankfully all the girls were okay!
We kept very busy; we toured the Golden Spike and Buffalo Bills home and barn. We also stopped at sponsor businesses where we signed autographs. We were also able to help out with the Miss Rodeo Nebraska competition and model in the fashion show. On Wednesday night the rodeo started, Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2011 was crowned during the rodeo. Congratulations to Rebecca Grimm!
I was very blessed to stay with Bob and Lisa Kosmacek and their family. With our busy schedule I didn’t get to see them much, but they were so kind and caring and treated me like their own.
I left before the sun was up on Thursday to head to Bellevue. I arrived just in time for a radio interview and children’s activities.

Three Hills Rodeo let me ride one of their horses and the horse was over 17 hands tall, I almost needed a ladder, but a little jump and an extra grunt did the trick! Throughout the rodeo each night I carried Old Glory and the sponsor flags between events. I had a wonderful time and will have to admit I really didn’t mind the rain and mud on Friday night. The rodeo was postponed for 45 minutes due to the severe thunderstorms, but as soon as the rain slowed down we hit the ground running. I stayed at the Bellevue House Bed and Breakfast while I was there. The house was gorgeous! I got the suite on the third floor and was treated like royalty! I want to thank the owners of the bed and breakfast for their wonderful hospitality. We toured the town of Bellevue and drove to the top of the South Bluff and overlooked the town…it was beautiful! I was able to tour one of the first houses in Bellevue. I was able to see my first barge go through the locks on the Mississippi.
I had so much fun in Bellevue, I love traveling the state and seeing what our great state has to offer. Thank you so the Bellevue Rodeo Committee, Three Hills Rodeo Inc., The Bellevue Bed and Breakfast and Stacy Bevan!

I head off to Edgewood bright and early in the morning and then back to my hometown rodeo late Friday night.

Cherokee PRCA Rodeo

The 44th Annual Cherokee PRCA Rodeo was held last weekend. This is the Barnes hometown rodeo which began in a pasture north of town until the Chamber of Commerce moved it to the arena where it is still held today!
Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa, Hannah Hilsabeck and I arrived Thursday morning. The Miss Rodeo Cherokee Queen Pageant started later that afternoon. I was one of the judges for the competition. There were 5 contestants and they competed in horsemanship, speeches and personal interviews.

The first performance was Thursday night. We helped out with the calf chasing and even got to chase after a calf and try and get the bandana off the tail. Needless to say, I didn’t get it! We also helped out with the calf chasing Friday night. Throughout the rodeos we signed autographs and mingled with the crowd.

On Friday morning we had radio interviews and a luncheon at a local business. Hannah and I spent sometime talking with the One Arm Bandit. Mr. John Payne didn’t give us his secrets on training buffalo, but he did say it takes a lot of time and buffalo are very mean!
He is very interesting to listen to.

Saturday morning I was the MC for the Exceptional Rodeo. The contestants had a wonderful time and each one picked out a trophy at the end. After the rodeo Hannah and I attended the re-enactment of a train robbery at the depot, we had lunch and then I headed home for a family wedding. I had a wonderful time and wanted to thank the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce for allowing us to attend. I would also like to thank the Best Western Hotel for providing a place for Hannah and me to stay.

This week I head to the High School Rodeo Finals in Fort Madison to judge the queen competition.

Franklin, TN

My trip to Franklin, Tennessee was a lot of fun…it would be a great place to take a vacation! Franklin is about a half hour from downtown Nashville and there are a lot of historical sites to see. I was there for the clinic a couple months ago and I was very excited to head back for the rodeo. I flew into Nashville on Tuesday morning. The Miss Rodeo Tennessee Pageant started on Wednesday afternoon. Miss Rodeo Missouri, Miss Rodeo Florida and I helped out where we could throughout the week. We attended the Franklin Rotary Club meeting and visited The Carter House. It was very interesting hearing about the Battle at Franklin. Miss Rodeo Missouri, Erin Watts, Miss Rodeo Florida, Heather Hall and I at the Carter House.

The first rodeo performance was on Thursday; the visiting royalty helped carry flags in the grand entry. During the rodeo we helped out at the ice tea stand and signed autographs.
I had a wonderful host family, Miss Rodeo Florida and I stay with Bill and Eddy Rosen. They treated us like their own daughters. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to stay with them; they were so kind and caring…I hope to make it back sometime and visit.

The Franklin Rotary Club puts on a wonderful rodeo, every member works so hard all year long to get the job done! I want to thank them for allowing visiting royalty to attend. I had a wonderful time in Franklin, but did have to leave early Saturday morning due to a family emergency.
My next trip is here in Iowa, I will be attending the Cherokee Rodeo the first weekend in June. I will also be judging the Cherokee Rodeo Queen contest, I am really excited!

Tulip Festival

On Friday, Hannah and I made an appearance at the Tulip Festival in Pella. We rode on the Pella FFA float for the afternoon parade and I rode on the float for evening parade. We were a little chilly, but thankfully it didn’t rain! I would like to thank Mr. Williams, the FFA Advisor and the members of the FFA Chapter for allowing us to ride on the float with them! The parade is made up of beautiful floats made with lots of tulips and other Dutch emblem’s. During the evening parades all the floats light up!

We were able to walk around before the parade and visit with people dressed in Dutch clothing; we also signed some autographs. We really enjoyed looking at all the beautiful tulips and we even tried on some wooden shoes, but we decided we would stick with our boots! I really enjoyed the festival; I treated myself to some Dutch food and BOY was it wonderful! There are so many people who put in a lot of time and work to make the festival a success and we really enjoyed being apart of it!Doctor David Roe and his family. Texas Roadhouse Meet and Greet

This last weekend I was a little closer to home. The PBR was in Des Moines and the Texas Roadhouse had a meet and greet with Aaron Roy. I was able to make an appearance with him. We signed autographs and hand out prizes. It was a lot of fun!
My co-workers really enjoyed asking me questions about what I do, how I got into rodeo and being a queen and they really loved my autograph sheets! I think I signed as many for everyone who works at the Roadhouse as I did for the customers that came into eat!

Saturday night I volunteered to prepare the dinner at the Ronald McDonald House. Paula, Connie, Judy, my mom, Joanne and Hannah, Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa helped with prepare the food. The Ronald McDonald house provides housing for families whose children are receiving treatment at the area hospitals. My sister and her husband stayed at the house for three months when Nash was in the hospital. The house is a wonderful place, there is food available at all times for anyone who stays and a dinner is served every night by volunteers.
I would like to thank Connie, Paula, Judy, Hannah and my mom for helping with the dinner!

Team Kuehl

Last weekend my family and I headed to Cedar Rapids to walk for the March of Dimes. The March of Dimes is dedicated to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature births and infant mortality. My sister, Jayme Kuehl has put together a team for the last couple of years. “Team Kuehl” had nineteen signed up to walk, but due to the weather there were only nine of us. Thankfully the rain stopped after the first mile of our seven mile walk. When we finished there were food stands and games for children to play. I was able to talk to the children and pass out candy. It was a lot of fun to help raise money for continued research for future babies!
“Team Kuehl” started a couple years ago after my sister had some complications with her pregnancy. We walk in memory of Faith, who passed away at birth. We also walk for Nash, who is now 3. Nash suffers from cerebral palsy, but has been a miracle and blessing to our family! Faith and Nash were both three months premature.
A large amount of money was raised for research and to continue to help premature births. I can’t thank everyone enough for your support! This weekend the PBR is in Des Moines and I will be signing autographs at the Texas Roadhouse Saturday from noon till 2…so stop by if you are close to Urbandale and say “Hi.” Also on Saturday, Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa, some of the Miss Rodeo Iowa board members and I will be preparing dinner for the families that are staying at the Ronald McDonald house in Des Monies. I am really looking forward to a busy, but fun weekend!

Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo

My first trip to Idaho for the Dodge National Circuit Finals rodeo was so much fun! Every morning I was able to wake up to the beautiful view of the mountains.
My trip was truly an adventure starting right at the airport in Des Moines. My flight was supposed to leave at 6:30 in the morning, but instead we didn’t leave until 8:30 because Chicago was having thunderstorms. And because of the delay I missed my connecting flight to Salt Lake City. I was lucky enough to get on a flight at 12:45, but that flight ended up not leaving until 1:30 because there was no crew! I missed my ride from Miss Rodeo Utah from the airport to Pocatello, but was able to get on a shuttle that dropped me off a block from my hotel! So after arriving 6 hours late I missed most the kick off party for the rodeo, but I am very thankful that I made it there safe!

On Wednesday we started the morning off at Holt Arena, practicing for the grand entry. After practice, some of us headed to the Pocatello Care Center. It was so much fun talking with the patients and signing autographs. We also got to take a look at the Life Flight helicopter and take pictures in it!
The rodeo started on Wednesday night, I didn’t carry flags that night so I helped sell programs and walked around signing autographs. I was able to help with the mutton busting at the rodeo as well.
On Thursday we visited some schools, went shopping at some local western stores and a few of us went with Miss Rodeo Florida up the mountain to see the snow. I can’t say I was all that excited about it after all the snow we have had this winter, but we did have fun throwing snowballs and taking pictures. Thursday night was Tough Enough to Wear Pink night at the rodeo. Matt Kenney and Wade Sundell competed and Matt won tie down roping that night with a 7.8!! Neither of them made the short go, but they both did an outstanding job and I really enjoyed watching a couple guys that I know personally…I competed in high school rodeo with both of them.
As a queen and the spokeswomen for the sport of rodeo, we do a lot of other jobs. At a couple rodeo performances a few of us queens watched a little boy, Gator. His dad was a tie down roper and he needed someone to watch his son while he competed. Gator sat with us and even signed autographs for people on some notebook paper we gave him. We had a lot of fun with him! On Friday we visited a nursing home and then signed autographs at the credit union. I carried sponsor flags throughout the rodeo both Friday and Saturday night.

Saturday morning was the special needs rodeo…my favorite! I was paired with Anthony. He loved the roping and also liked to pull the head off of the hay bale, so I did a lot of running after him:) There was a Saturday afternoon performance and then the short go was held Saturday night. Eight people made the short go in each event and then the top four came back for the finals.
My flight home was at 7 AM on Sunday so Miss Rodeo Idaho was nice enough to volunteer to take me to the airport along with a couple other state queens. Since it is a three hour drive, we drove an hour to her house, slept for two and then got up and drove two more hours. So we all basically pulled an all nighter, I haven’t done that since high school prom! By the time I got home on Sunday afternoon, I was pretty tired!

The DNCFR was a great rodeo. The committee works very hard to put on a wonderful rodeo. I can’t thank Carma enough for putting everything together and scheduling events for us throughout the week. I would also like to thank our drivers; there were four wonderful volunteers that drove us to and from events. I rode with Fred Evans all week and he treated us like royalty! Opened the doors for us, picked us up at the front door every time and was the sweetest gentleman! He even had water and candy for us everyday in the van! Somehow Fred just knew I loved candy!!

It was a wonderful experience and I can’t wait for my next trip. I have a few things here in Iowa in the next couple of weeks and then I will be heading to Franklin, Tennessee in May.

Miss Rodeo Iowa Clinic

Amanda Eason, Miss Rodeo Iowa 2007 is AMAZING! She put the clinic together, arranged all the speakers and took care of everything. The clinic was very organized, each speaker did a wonderful job and there was a lot of information given.

I was able to help out and give a presentation on preparing for a pageant. I talked about what to study, gave some tips on how to study and when to start studying.

Two Trips in One Week!

My first trip was to Eastern Iowa. I was able to ride in the Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Cedar Rapids. I can’t thank Randy Kuehl Honda enough for their sponsorship this year. I had a wonderful Saint Patrick’s Day in Cedar Rapids. There were two Honda cars in the parade and I was able to ride in the back of a Honda Ridgeline.

Boy, was there a lot of people in green! Thankfully the sun showed up right as the parade started, so it was a very pleasant ride through downtown Cedar Rapids.

On Friday my mom and I headed off to Franklin, TN. I attended the Miss Rodeo Tennessee queen clinic on Saturday and Sunday. It was very nice of my mom to ride along…okay I’ll admit it, I did most of the riding…and she drove! But it was nice to have some company for the long drive! On the way there is was about 11 hours, but thankfully the traffic wasn’t bad on the way home so we made it in about 10.
It was a wonderful clinic put on by Kelly Azevedo, the Miss Rodeo Tennessee Pageant Director and clinician Amanda Jenkins, Miss Rodeo America 2006. They both provided so much information. I had a wonderful time and look forward to heading back to Franklin this summer for the Miss Rodeo Tennessee Pageant and rodeo.

Iowa Public Television Festival

On Sunday evening I hope you tuned into IPTV because Hannah, Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa and I were there helping them with their festival. The festival takes place through March 21 and it gives Iowan’s and surrounding states a chance to support the programming they enjoy all year long. We arrived at 6:30, had a little training and then went live. Throughout the evening we took calls; getting pledges and asking callers a few questions. We did make it on TV a few times during the night! There were a few callers that specifically called in to talk to the girls in the cowgirl hats!

Hannah and I had a great time! All of the volunteers were so much fun and IPTV was very generous in providing a meal as well as snacks throughout the night.

I will be heading to Franklin, TN this weekend for a queen clinic!

Silver Spurs Rodeo in Kissimmee, FL

I got sun burnt and I’m happy about it! Normally that would not be the case, but after this winter it was great to be out in the sun!
My trip to Florida was more than I expected; we had so much fun and I met so many wonderful people.
I arrived in Orlando last Wednesday night and was able to meet up with Miss Rodeo Utah, Chris Wade and Miss Rodeo Wisconsin Amanda Breintfield. Twelve other girls from around the country were already there along with Miss Rodeo America, Kelli Jackson.

I stayed with Heather Hall, Miss Rodeo Florida and her family. Mark and Julie Hall are such wonderful people. They opened their house to us and made it our home for the week! They even cooked southern grits for us…I did try them, but don’t think I will be eating grits on a regular basis.

Thursday we had four school visits. The children were so excited; we talked about the sport of rodeo, explained a few events, and invited all of them to the Silver Spurs Rodeo.

Thursday night we were able to experience Florida hog hunting! We rode on buggies that looked like over sized 4-wheelers with tractor tires and drove around Deseret Ranch. We only saw one hog; he was rather small and looked like he needed some Iowa corn!

Then on Friday we went air boating on Cypress Lake. We saw alligators, both BIG and small, a few bald eagles and an assortment of birds. After air boating, the Hall’s opened up the house for everyone to enjoy lunch. Friday night was the first rodeo performance and Tough Enough to Wear Pink. All the visiting royalty helped with the grand entry and the tribute to breast cancer awareness. We stopped to eat on our way home from the beach and this friendly alligator was available for pictures.

Saturday morning we all loaded up and headed to Cocoa Beach. It was a little cloudy, but by the time we arrived the sun was shining and we were all able to dip our toes in the ocean.

Saturday night was another performance. We carried our state flags and again took part in the grand entry. Throughout the rodeo we walked around, visited with sponsors and signed autographs.

Sunday morning a few of us attended Cowboy Church and then headed to the Special Needs Rodeo. There were over 50 children! I was paired up with Nicholas and his father Allen. We tried our hand at roping then Nicholas rode a steer and horse. He was also able to pet a goat.

Allen said that they had never been to anything like this before, Nicholas had a blast! At the end he received a trophy and bag of goodies. I really enjoyed myself, I love helping with Special Needs Rodeo’s.

The rodeo performance was at two on Sunday. Again the royalty helped with the grand entry and signed autographs during the rodeo. There were people from all over the world there; I talked to a few families from England!

After the rodeo we were able to go to Disney World. Miss Rodeo South Dakota, McKenzie Haley meant a family at the Special Needs Rodeo who worked at Disney World. Their daughter just loved the rodeo and was so excited we were going to go to Disney World with her. It was late, but we were able to make it on a few rides before the park closed. We all had so much fun! I can’t thank Mallory and her parents enough for taking us to the park.

Thank you to the Silver Spurs Rodeo committee, my host family; Mark and Julie Hall and Mark and Laura Kessler for all of their generosity. I had an experience of a lifetime in Kissimmee and I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to meet all of these wonderful people. I really appreciate all of their kindness and generosity.

Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa Coronation Celebration

Hannah Hilsabeck was officially crowned on Saturday night at her coronation in Winterset. Thankfully the weather held out for a little while, but the snow did start coming down towards the end so the drive home was longer than normal, but we should be use to that in Iowa...its not a normal day if we don't get a little snow right?? :)

It was a fantastic evening. Hannah has so much support behind her and I really look forward to our year together.

There was a wonderful dinner, live and silent auction's as well as a king contest. The visiting royalty helped with her live auction and the auctioneer auctioned off a pie giving the highest bidder a chance to throw it in his face. Hannah was given the opportunity to throw the cream pie and she didn't miss!! It was pretty funny and a great idea to help raise money!

The night finished with live entertainment. I really enjoyed myself and it was nice to sit back and relax. I know that Hannah and I are going to have a great year together and I can't wait to start traveling with her!

One more day till Florida...just about packed and more than ready to go!

Loud music + excited little girls = A LOT of FUN!!

Friday night I was able to attend a father and daughter sweetheart dance in Winterset. There were over 100 first through fourth graders... boy was it fun! I sure wish I still had that much energy; those girls ran around and danced for over two hours straight, but by the end of the night a lot of the girls were being carried out by there fathers and grandfathers.

Miss Iowa, Katherine Connors and I danced and signed autographs throughout the night.

I am so thankful that the Winterset Park & Recreation Department puts on this dance each year with this being the fifth year…I don’t remember having anything like that as a child, so I really enjoyed myself!

I would also like to thank Ramona Davis; the recreational specialist for inviting me to attend! I hope this dance continues for years to come.

Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo

The week after my coronation I headed to the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo. There were a couple other state queens there as well, McKenzie Haley, Miss Rodeo South Dakota and Erin Heffron, Miss Rodeo Wyoming. We had so much fun! We really enjoyed getting to know each other a little more.
On Thursday we signed autographs and attended a couple parties before the Seminole Hard Rock Xtreme Bulls. The Sutton Rodeo Company provided the stock and we were able to carry sponsor flags throughout the show. It was a fun and exciting night!

On Saturday morning we went to the Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo Queen contest. McKenzie held the title last year so we joined her at the speech and modeling portion of the competition. There were three wonderful girls competing for the title; I thought the judges were really going to have a tough decision; all three girls did a fantastic job! Later that afternoon we went and watched their horsemanship at the fair grounds. Teri Joe Weidner from Wolsey, SD was crowned the 2010 queen. I wish her the best of luck throughout her year. I know she will be a great representative for the stock show.

I really enjoyed myself in Rapid City; the stock show was so much fun! I also have family that lives out there so I was able to see them a little bit during my trip.
My next trip is in a couple weeks and I will be heading to Kissimmee, Florida! You have know idea how excited I am!! Don’t worry; I will enjoy the warmer weather for all of you!

Miss Rodeo Iowa 2010

I’m living my childhood dream; my year as Miss Rodeo Iowa 2010 has started! I am so excited to promote the sport that I love and represent the great state of Iowa.

I ran for the title in Fort Madison in conjunction with the Tri-State rodeo last September. My duties as Miss Rodeo Iowa 2010 started right away. I was able to help Lindsey Ahrenholtz, Miss Rodeo Iowa 2009, out at the Waterloo PRCA Rodeo at the end of September. We had a wonderful time and didn’t realize we looked so much alike, but after three people called me Lindsey I thought we might need name tags.

Binion Cervi presented me with roses after being crowned. He along with his family have one of the larges stock companies in rodeo history; Cervi Rodeo Company.

In December I flew out to watch the Miss Rodeo America pageant at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. I was able to cheer on Lindsey and BOY do I have big boots to fill. Lindsey looked wonderful and did a fantastic job. It was a great opportunity for me to see what I need to start preparing for to compete for Miss Rodeo America 2011.

While in Vegas I was able to attend a bowling party for the all of the ladies in waiting from around the country. We had a great time and I met so many wonderful state queens. I really look forward to all of the traveling to spend time with all of these young women. I would like to thank the Miss Rodeo America board for having the party for us, we really had a great time!

The first weekend in January I went down to attend Katie Chaffin, Miss Rodeo Illinois, coronation celebration. I had a great time and helped with the live auction. The food was great and Katie had a wonderful turn out!

The second week in January, Katie and I were able to attend the Denver Stock Show and market. Don and Shirley Staver of Afton, Iowa own a western store and were kind enough to let us ride along with them. We traveled in a pick-up so we had to pack everything in totes to go in the back. Katie and I need to start packing a little lighter or we are going to have to start renting a U-Haul!

We arrived in Denver on a Wednesday and stayed with some of their family, Rus and Laurie Dudek. They were so generous in letting us stay with them.
On Thursday Don and Shirley took us to a few western stores and then to the Roper Warehouse. We were so excited when they told us we could buy anything in the warehouse at wholesale price. There were rows and rows of shirts, this place was huge. I will have to say I did keep myself under control:)

Then on Friday we went to the Denver Market; this is a wholesale market for businesses only. Since we were with Staver’s we were able to order at wholesale prices and as queens we were also given a lot of free items, we really got treated like royalty!
We attended the Denver Stock Show and PRCA rodeo on Saturday. There were three performances and I was able to help carry sponsor flags and show off my beautiful chaps made by Cary Vetch of Ankeny. Along with helping carry flags I was able to help with the children’s mutton busting. It was a long day, but we had a great time and really enjoyed the stock show. Jodi Martin did a wonderful job organizing all the visiting royalty and really appreciated all of her hard work.

We were able to attend the Denver Market again on Sunday and Monday morning and for a couple of hours each day Katie and I signed autographs in the Tandy Leather Booth. These gentlemen were so generous and I can’t wait to wear my beautiful belts I received.

I got home late Monday night, despite the fog; I knew I needed to get home to prepare for my coronation. I was very lucky to make it back to Lake City before the big ice storm.

On Wednesday we were hit with lots of ice, the worst storm I’ve ever seen. I didn’t know electrical poles could snap like they did and thousands of people were without power, but thankfully my family had a generator. We went into the community building Friday morning and found that there was still no electricity. As we set-up for my coronation I tried to keep a positive attitude and did lots of praying. Thankfully Saturday morning the electricity was back on! The weather wasn’t the best, but my coronation went very well. There were around 240 people who attended; several from out of state. I can’t thank everyone enough for coming and being so generous. Thank you to all of you who have donated your time, food and auction items. I would also like to thank all of you who bought auction items or gave money donations. What a blessing each of you have been, this was above all of my expectations.
